Populus Group Taps on Global Talent as a Business Strategy and as a Mission

BD and Marketing Team

For Brandon Byrd, the Director of Foreign National Talent Management at Populus Group, global talent isn’t just a business strategy, it’s a mission. Since joining the company in 2011 and taking the helm of its foreign national program in 2021, Byrd has seen firsthand how international professionals bring not only technical expertise but also resilience and drive, strengthening both the workforce and the communities they contribute to. Simply put, through its innovations in incorporating global talent into its operations, Byrd has seen Populus Group improve the talent it offers its corporate customers.

Populus Group, an employment solutions firm established in 2002, has long recognized the value of international professionals, particularly in IT roles. As demand for specialized tech talent surged, the company began sponsoring foreign nationals in 2005, evolving its program into a cornerstone of its business model. What started as a strategic initiative has now transformed into a force for change in the employment landscape.

“We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed. We root for the underdog,” Byrd says. “Many of the most qualified candidates in IT require visa sponsorship, either now or in the future. Aligning our company values with industry demand has allowed us to build a program that has provided thousands of sponsorship opportunities over the past 20 years.”

The impact of hiring international talent extends far beyond just filling positions with specific STEM degrees. These professionals bring fresh perspectives and an unmatched work ethic. Yet, despite their potential, many struggle with barriers that have nothing to do with their skills or experience.

Over the years, Populus Group has worked to make it simpler for its corporate clients to utilize global talent. What started with a focus on H-1B sponsorship has now grown into a comprehensive program that not only provides long-term sponsorship opportunities but also ensures compliance, recruitment support, and ethical employment practices. Populus Group has helped to process more than 5,000 H-1B petitions, supported over 800 employment-based permanent residency applications, and assisted more than 1,000 international students to work on their Optional Practical Training (OPT) portion of their student visas. These numbers represent real people—talented professionals who now have a clear path to career success in the United States.

But Byrd sees an even bigger impact. “Our foreign national professionals have challenged us to be better, improving our processes and bringing clarity to what global talent truly needs,” he says. “From continuous employment support to helping with international travel logistics, we’ve learned how to create a more sustainable and ethical employment model.”

At the heart of it all is the belief that global talent doesn’t just fill jobs, it transforms businesses. The drive and dedication that international professionals bring to their work lift entire industries, pushing companies to grow, innovate, and expand their reach. It’s no surprise that 75 percent of the professionals Populus Group sponsors began their journeys as international students pursuing advanced degrees in IT-related fields. Their expertise is in high demand, but it’s their resilience and ambition that make them indispensable.

“Their drive to succeed in the U.S. aligns with our company values,” Byrd says. “By supporting their journey, we’re not just meeting workforce needs, we’re strengthening Michigan’s reputation as a destination for highly skilled professionals.”

Populus Group’s vision for the future is about more than just business growth. It’s about fostering real connections between global professionals, local businesses, and universities. Byrd and his team are working to promote ethical hiring practices, educate employers on the benefits of global talent, strengthen applicants’ backgrounds, and build a sustainable pipeline for international professionals.

“By investing in global talent, we’re investing in our communities,” Byrd says. “And that’s a win for everyone!”
